A common musical structure that includes repetition of a musical phrase is strophic form. This structure is characterized by the repetition of the same music for each stanza or verse of lyrics, which means that the same musical material is used repeatedly with different text. This approach creates a memorable and engaging experience for listeners, as they become familiar with the musical phrase associated with the lyrics.
In contrast, theme and variations involve taking a theme and altering it in various ways throughout the piece but does not inherently focus on the repetition of a single musical phrase in the same manner. Binary form features two contrasting sections that usually do not repeat in a straightforward manner. Sonata form is much more complex and typically includes multiple themes and sections (exposition, development, and recapitulation), focusing on thematic development rather than straightforward repetition. Therefore, strophic form is the structure that best embodies the idea of a repeated musical phrase.
